Power Steering Accessory Drive
Wasted energy – compounded by not enough energy when you need it – has long been a problem for heavy duty commercial vehicles.
The issue is simple: engine driven power steering pumps tend to produce more flow and pressure at cruise speeds than is needed. And, at the same time, demands on the pump are highest when the driver wants to turn the vehicle from a stop on dry pavement. Sizing a pump for this condition leads to a lot of wasted hydraulic energy when the vehicle is above idle speeds.
A power steering accessory drive incorporating NuVinci® CVP technology provides better performance and more economy by separating the engine speed from pump speed. This enables the pump to work in its operational range based on demand regardless of engine speed. The NuVinci power steering accessory drives enable control of output speed, independent of engine speed. At engine idle, output speeds may be increased on demand providing more performance from the pump. At higher engine speeds (such as accelerating from a stop or cruising), accessory speeds may be reduced, saving energy and improving fuel economy. The NuVinci CVP also shifts quickly to help smooth out transients.
